Types of seashells

There are thousands of different types of seashells, but they can generally be classified into several categories based on their physical characteristics. Here are some of the main types of seashells:

  1. Gastropods: These are the most common type of seashell and are characterized by their spiral shape. Examples include conch shells, whelks, and snails.

  2. Bivalves: These seashells are characterized by their two hinged shells that can open and close like a clam. Examples include scallops, clams, and oysters.

  3. Cephalopods: These seashells are characterized by their elongated shape and include the nautilus and the cuttlefish.

  4. Brachiopods: These seashells resemble bivalves but have a different internal structure. They are less common and include the lampshell and the articulate brachiopod.

  5. Scaphopods: These seashells are tubular and resemble a small tusk. Examples include the tooth shell and the elephant tusk shell.

  6. Polyplacophora: These seashells are also known as chitons and are characterized by their segmented, flattened shells.

  7. Echinoderms: These seashells are not actually shells but are the calcified plates that make up the body of sea urchins, sand dollars, and starfish.

Each of these types of seashells can have a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, making them unique and beautiful in their own way.
